Club meeting 28 December 2008

DBMM 15mm Spartans and NormansAll ancients games today - two DBMM and one FoG.

Field of Glory 15mm - Rob's Byzantines beat Philip's Pontic army. Our first FoG game for quite a while, but we picked it up pretty easily. The game was largely decided by the cavalry clash, with the infantry contributing little to the combat other than some longer range archery and skirmishing.

DBMM 25mm - Brett (Medieval Germans) beat Andrew (Early Crusaders)

DBMM 15mm - Al (Spartans) won 16-9 over Kendall (Normans). In the picture here you can see the nearer hill occupied by the Spartan light troops. In front of the rough ground the Spartan hoplites are fighting the Norman knights and blades. To their rear is the Spartan baggage being sacked by a Norman flank march. A close fight, decided when the Norman general rolled an untimely 1 in combat.

Club meeting 14 December 2008

Warhammer game at the clubThree Warhammer fantasy battle games at the club today:
Kyran (Orge Kingdoms) versus Rob (Warriors of Chaos)- Solid Victory to Rob
Mark (Empire) versus Garth (Warriors of Chaos)- win to Garth
Rob (Warriors of Chaos) versus Garth (Warriors of Chaos)- winning draw to Garth.

Flames of War (Late War, encounter game) Ken's Panzer Pioneers defeated Kendall's Panzer Grenadiers.

DBMM 25mm (400AP) Brett's Medieval Germans beat Philip's Kushite Egyptians 18-7

Club meeting 23 November 2008

DBR 25mm - Grant (Buccaneers) v Philip (Early Tudor English with Maximilian allies)

Flames of War - Ken (Germans) and Rob (British) had a massive late war game.

Club meeting 9 November 2008

In a Flames of War fighting withdrawal scenario, Kit's Russians got a narrow 4-3 victory over Ken's Germans.

There was a day of Matchlock Madness - a 25mm DBR mini-tourney. We used 300AP armies on 6x4 tables. Two games in the morning:
Kendall (Hussites) 10-0 Lawrence (German Catholics)
John (Japanese) 10-0 Philip (Early Tudor English)
And in the afternoon:
John (Japanese) 10-0 Kendall (Hussites)
Lawrence (German Catholics) 10-0 Philip (Early Tudor English)

Club meeting 26 October 2008

Most of us were away for the weekend to other conventions (Flames GT in Auckland and the New Plymouth 25mm ancients tournament). At the club today Kendall and Matt were using the Tumbling Dice aircraft models.

Flames of War Grand Tournament - 25-26 October 2008

There were five NSWC players out of the 42 at the Late War NZGT.
Kit won best painted and came 4th. (Waffen SS panzer grenadiers)
Lee used US 2nd Armored Division. He got best general and came 6th overall, and also won the contest for guessing how many bits of models put in a jar!
Rob used British Para armoured reece, and came 15th.
Ken came 25th and used the panzer pioneers.
Tristan was 27th and used Panzer Pioneer as well.

Not too bad from NSWC.

Club meeting 12 October 2008

The were lots of Flames of War training games on today, as the Grand Tournament is on in a couple of weeks.
Rob (British - 6th Armoured Airborne Recce Regiment) v Tristan (Germans - Panzer Pioneer) win to Rob
Wayne (Germans - Gebirgsjager) v Ken (Germans) win to Ken
Rob (British - Airborne) v Wayne (Germans - Gebirgsjager) win to Rob

There were also two more games from the DBMM competition, both in 25mm.
Al (Spartans) 25-0 Andrew (Early Crusaders)
Benny (Late Romans) 25-0 Kendall (Hussites)

Club meeting 28 September 2008

Several games happening today as part of the regular club meeting, as well as the second day of PoP. Mark and Nick played Warhammer Fantasy Battle; Brett and Kit played Flames of War; and Lee and Robert also played Flames of War.

Push of Pike 2008 - 27-28 September

7. Andrew Bennetts (French and Venetians) - 113

Congratulations to John for his win, and thanks to everyone for a most enjoyable tournament!

Club meeting 14 September 2008

Kendall and Kit played a Flames of War game. Kendall's newly assembled and unpainted [shame] 155mm SP artillery helped the American cause, but not enough to stop the German panzer force.

The last game of Round Three in the DBMM competition was between Andrew and Lawrence, using 15mm armies (Hittites and Assyrians). Lawrence won a 25-0 victory (interestingly enough, the third 25-0 result of round three). The draw for Round Four has now been done, and we have also played the first of the games today: Brett (Medieval Germans) winning 23-2 over Philip (Kushite Egyptians).

Club meeting 31 August 2008

Just the one game today. WFB: Rob (Orcs and hordes of Hobgoblins) lost to Antony (Dark Elves).

Club meeting 24 August 2008

There was no power in the club hall because of the recent storms, but the meeting went ahead anyway. There was enough daylight to play the games, although it did get rather murky later in the afternoon! We had two more games in the DBMM competition (both 25mm)
Brett (Medieval Germans) 20-5 v Ivan (Medieval Portuguese)
Kendall (Hussites) 25-0 Al (Spartans)
There is just one more game to play in Round Three (Andrew v Lawrence)
Matt, Philip and Rob played a couple of games of Carcasson Hunters and Gatherers.

Club meeting 10 August 2008

DBR 25mm German Catholic Imperialists and Later Polish armiesWe had a couple of DBR 25mm games at the club today. Lawrence's German Catholic Imperial army defeated Scott's Later Poles (pictured here). The Germans got off to a slow start with low pips, but once deployed their infantry and cavalry formations were able to wear down the hard fighting superior shot of the Poles.

Philip's Early Tudor English beat Andrew's Tripolitanians 9-1. The Tripolitanians were defending and placed a BUA and large scrubby area for their warbands to advance through. Some made it into the English baggage, but eventually the the English billmen, longbows and lancers inflicted enough casualties to get the win. The game was 450AP, giving the Tripolitanians a great mass of warbands, sipahis and light horse, and the English had an allied contingent from the Maximilian imperialists.

Club meeting 27 July 2008

Just the one game at the club meeting today, another one from the DBMM competition. Benny's new Marian Roman army was fielded for the first time, but suffered a 25-0 defeat by Philip's old Kushite Egyptians. Again the battle was decided by a flank march getting into the baggage.

DBMM competition 24 July 2008

24 July 2008. The second round of the DBMM competition has been completed, with a win to Brett (Samurai) over Al (Spartans).
The draw for Round Three is:
Ivan v Brett
Philip v Benny
Al v Kendall
Lawrence v Andrew

Club meeting 13 July 2008

Round Two of the Ancients Competition is underway. Results of today's comp games:
Ivan (Medieval Portuguese) 20-5 Philip (Kushite Egyptians) [25mm]
Benny (Pyrrhic) 14-11 Lawrence (Later Assyrians) [15mm]
Kendall (Hussites) 12-13 Andrew (Early Crusaders) [25mm]

One other non-comp game at the club today was also a DBMM 25mm medieval game - Brett's Germans vs Rob's Portuguese.
DBMM 15mm Assyrians vs Pyrrhic

Club meeting 29 June 2008

Grant and Philip played a 25mm DBR game using the Nicon armies, Buccaneers and Early Tudor English. The English cavalry threw themselves into the masses of Buccaneer infantry, but not many of them emerged again. A 9-1 win to the Poyrats.

Two more games in the Ancients Competition concluded the first round. Firstly, Ivan got a decisive 25-0 win over Andrew. Ivan was using the Medieval Portuguese, in the Year of Great Regularity 1385. Andrew used Early Crusaders, with Bedouin and non-appearing Syrian Allies. A brilliant Crusader outflank arrived on the first turn, but didn't last long. In the other closely fought game, Al the Spartan won a 14-11 victory over Benny (Carthaginians in Spain).
The draw for Round Two is:
Ivan v Philip
Brett v Al
Benny v Lawrence
Kendall v Andrew

Club meeting 8 June 2008

Just one Ancients Competition game at the club today. Philip (Mithridatics) beat Kendall (Normans) 23-2. The Normans had the wind in their favour, but going against them was an unreliable ally and a flank march that never showed up.

NICON, 31 May - 1 June 2008

NICON was held in Palmerston North this year, hosted by the Manawatu Duellists' Society, and held at the Massey University Events Centre. It was a spacious venue, and lots of large tables were available for the 25mm competitions. Catering was the basic wargamers' diet of pies and coke, and the fine convention tradition of free coffee and tea was maintained.

Our club had players in most of the competitions: Nick in Warhammer; Benny in DBMM; Brett in Field of Glory; Lawrence, Philip, and Scott in DBR; Kit and Rob in Flames of War; and Al in Moderns. Robbie won the award for Best General in FoW, and Philip took second place in DBR. Pictures and results of DBR games are on our Renaissance page.

Field of Glory 15mm, Nicon 2008There were two Ancients competitions this year, and the convention organisers considerately separated the tables of the DBMM fundamentalists from the FoG evangelicals.

There were 14 players in the 15mm Field of Glory competition. Brett was our club's only player in this competitin. He used Later Carthaginians (Hannibal in Africa 202 BC). Benny also had Later Carthaginians in the 25mm DBMM competition which had just 6 players (3 from Auckland/North Shore and 3 from Wellington).

Flames of War was a late-war competition with 1500 point armies. There were 30 players in this competition. Pictured below is Kit's German force, and Rob's British Paras (on a snowy white terrain board). Rob won the award for Best General and was 4th overall, and Kit was 8th.

Moderns 1/300 at Nicon 2008The Moderns 1/300 competition had pre-1980 armies. Al's army was the Black Watch and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Caribiniers and Greys). Lots of work had gone into making all the terrain, as you can see here.

Nicon 2009 will be in Hawkes Bay.

Club meeting 25 May 2008

We had a few training games getting ready for the upcoming Nicon convention and FoW grand tournament. In a Field of Glory game, Brett's Carthaginians took on Andrew's Medieval Spanish. Rob's para force played Clinton's Germans in Flames of War. Grant's new Buccaneer army played John's Japanese in 25mm DBR. The buccaneer frigates are pictured here.
Buccaneer frigates for DBR 25mm

Club meeting 11 May 2008

The first game of the DBMM Ancients Competition saw an 18-7 win to Brett (Muslim Indians) over Lawrence (Later Assyrians).

In a Napoleonics game, Rob (Duchy of Warsaw) played Andrew from City Guard with a Britishish Force. A draw after much trying to figure out how First Volley worked.

Club meeting 27 April 2008

Two Field of Glory games at the club today. In 15mm, Brett's Carthaginians took on Kendall's Wars of the Roses English. In 25mm Al's Spartans beat Rob's Medieval Portuguese.
There was a Flames of War game between a small force of Finns holding the line against a rather larger Russian Guards formation.Flames of War FinnsFlames of War Russian Guards

Club meeting 13 April 2008

FoG - Medieval Portuguese vs Germans13 April 2008. This was the club's Annual General Meeting. At the AGM we re-elected the same club committee. Fees are again set at $35 for the year. Two competitions for Ancients will be held using DBMM and Field of Glory rules. Competitions for DBR, Flames of War, and Warhammer might also be held this year, depending on how organised we get.

Games at the club today:

DBMM 25mm - Andrew (Early Crusaders) played Philip (Kushite Egyptians). 22-3 to the Egyptians. This was a 450AP game, in preparation for the AWC DBMM event 10/11 May.

FoG 25mm - The game pictured here shows Rob's Medieval Portuguese (on the left) taking on Brett's Medieval Germans.

We also had several visitors from the City Guard, playing games of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, and Warhammer 40K.

Club meeting 30 March 2008

FoG - Carthage vs Pontus30 March 2008. Today saw the first game of Field of Glory played at the club. Brett using Carthaginians under the inspirational leadership of Hannibal beat Philip using a Pontic army under an inspirational but anonymous general.

In a Flames of War game, Lee's Finnish infantry won 4-3 against Kendall's US Armor.

Next meeting, 13 April 2008, is the Annual General Meeting.

Club meeting 23 March 2008

Just the one game at the club today - a 25mm DBMM clash between Benny's Carthaginians and Philip's Egyptians. We played 450 AP, and the result was an 18-7 win to the Egyptians

Natcon 21-23 March 2008

Natcon was held in Christchurch this year. Not many Aucklanders attended this year, and only two from our club - Kit and Rob both playing in Flames of War. Kit was third in Early War with Colonial Italians and Rob was 5th in Mid War with Brit Paras.

Next year Natcon will be in Hamilton, so there should be a much bigger North Shore contingent then.

Club meeting 9 March 2008

25mm DBMM Egpytian chariots and SpartiatesOnly two games at the club today, both 25mm DBMM. No FoG related activies at the club yet, other than lots of discussions and pawing of the new books.

The game pictured here was 450 AP, played by Al's Spartans and Philip's Egyptians. One Spartan flank command of Thracians and Peltasts was beaten by a combination of Egyptian cavalry and archers. The Spartiates and mercenary hoplites were attacked by much greater numbers of Egypian infantry and chariots. The Greeks broke the attackers for little loss. The result was an 18-7 win to the Greeks.

In the other game, Brett's Medieval Germans took on Kendall's Hussites.

Our next club meeting coincides with the Nationals, but as we have only a few members attending this year our regular club meeting will go ahead as normal.

Club meeting 24 February 2008

Spanish tercio, DBR 15mmWe had three games at the club today.

In a 25mm DBMM game, Benny's Carthaginians beat Andrew's Early Crusaders. A Numidian flank march arrived promptly, and helped defeat the knights. Meanwhile on the other flank, a Spanish ambush took care of a great mass of crusading pilgrim hordes.

In DBR (15mm, 500AP) Lee's Royalists with Irish allies fought to a mutual break with Philip's Low Countries Spanish. The Spanish had two full-sized tercios. One was defeated by flanking firepower, the other fought its way through the centre of the English infantry.

Robbie's NZers took on Kit's Germans in an early war Flames of War game.

BattleCry 9-10 February 2008

BattleCry 2008The Battlecry convention is on this week at the Freemans Bay Community Centre.

We have three teams in the 25mm DBMM doubles competition: Brett and Lawrence (Medieval Germans with Swiss allies) came 4th with 52 points, Danny and John (Scandinavian Union with Swedish allies) 5th with 48 points, and Andrew and Philip (Kushite Egyptians) 6th with 42 points.

Kit is taking part in a large multi-player Flames of War game on his desert terrain, and Robbie is playing the new Victory at Sea naval game. Also on at BattleCry are lots of Warhammer 40K games, and a there was a 1/300 moderns game based on an attack/defence scenario in 1980s West Germany.

Club meeting 27 January 2008

DBR 15mm Knights of St John and German CatholicsGames at the club today:
DBR 15mm - Lawrence (TYW German Catholics) v Philip (Knights of St John). The Germans' skirmishers neutralised the mounted knights on the flanks while the German infantry and artillery defeated the Knights' foot attack. Meanwhile the galleys of the Knights struggled against a headwind, arriving only in time to see their army break. A 10-0 win to Lawrence.
Flames of War - Lee (Finns) v Kendall (US Airborne). An American victory.
Flames of War - Lee (Finns) v Rob (British armour). Sustained assaults by masses of Shermans and Stuarts eventually took an objective.
WHFB - Aaron brought out an old army of rats to take on Mark's Orcs.

Club meeting 13 January 2008

Aaron's OrcsDBMM 25mm Hussites vs CarthaginiansThere were three games at the club today. It was Orcs for Africa in WHFB in two games; Mark and Nick, and Aaron and Rob, with everyone using an Orc and Goblin army. (Aaron's Orcs pictured here)

In a 25mm DBMM game, Benny's Carthaginians took on Kendall's Hussites. The Hussites had a flank march and a delayed command, both of which appeared on their first dice roll. The game illustrated here shows the Hussite army deployed at the top of the picture and their flank march just as it has arrived in the lower side. The Carthie infantry tried to break the main wagenburg but couldn't, the Spanish breaking. The nellies got one of the wagons in the outflank but the rest of the boys gamely held on for a 25-0 to the Hussites. Wine and biscuits all round!
